covid-19 test for school sports

COVID-19 Tests for School Sports

Is it time for you or your loved one to return to school sports? Chances are, the team requires you to obtain negative COVID-19 tests before or during your participation in school sports. These testing requirements are implemented to help make teams and schools safe as more and more athletes, coaches, and other staff return to in-person activities. Vaccines may also be required depending on the student’s age and local availability. Universal testing for athletes, coaches, and other staff makes the school sport environment safer as vaccines become widely available and the pandemic winds down in the United States. This is especially true given that most vaccines have yet to be approved for young children, which makes effective testing for young age groups critical to maintaining the health and safety of the team. Regardless, we understand that frequent COVID-19 testing can be a chore, especially for busy parents and college students. If you need a COVID-19 test for school sports, visit Urgent Care La Jolla today! (858) 255-8325

How to Protect Yourself From COVID-19 & The Flu

With both flu season and the COVID-19 pandemic upon us, you should vigilantly take precautions to protect yourself, your family, and the people you interact with. People who are at risk for severe complications of COVID-19 are at an even higher risk with the flu and COVID-19 viruses circulating concurrently. As a reminder, risk factors for COVID-19 include pre-existing heart or lung disease, obesity, and old age — a significant portion of the American population. Here are some steps that you can continue to take to protect yourself and the people you interact with from both the flu and COVID-19:

mask protect from covid-191. Wear your mask. COVID-19 is an airborne disease, according to recent guidance from the CDC. Wear a clean, well-fitting mask that covers both your mouth and nose anytime you enter a place of business or worship, come in contact with people outside your household, or engage in any other indoor activity. Although outdoor activity is generally safer than indoor activity, we still recommend that you wear a mask to minimize your risk. Masks are essential especially if your outdoor activity brings you within 6 feet of a person outside your household.

2. Wash your hands frequently. Wash your hands before you leave your house and frequently while you are out, especially after using the restroom or interacting with high-touch surfaces like door handles, ATM buttons, or gas pumps. Lather with soap and water for 20 seconds up to your elbows, then rinse with warm water. If hand washing isn’t available. Make sure to bring hand sanitizer with you in case hand washing isn’t available.

3. Limit contact with people outside of your household. Follow local health ordinances in your area. Generally, the less direct interaction you have with people outside your household, the smaller your risk of contracting either the flu or COVID-19. If you do plan on interacting with people outside your household, wear a mask and wash your hands when possible.

4. If you have symptoms, self-isolate and get tested! Testing without a doctor’s referral is widely available in San Diego. Please visit the website http://LHI.care to register for a COVID-19 PCR test in your area performed without a doctor referral. If you are symptomatic, you should immediately take steps to self-isolate and contact your doctor for next steps. If your symptoms are severe or worsening, please call your doctor or visit your local emergency room.

With flu season arriving, it is extremely important to continue practicing preventative steps to avoid both flu and COVID-19. If you need urgent medical care, please contact Urgent Care La Jolla at (858) 255-8325. We are also offering virtual doctor visits if you are unable to come to our clinic.

The Difference Between Common Cold & Allergies

When you develop a stuffy nose or irritating cough, you might assume it is caused by the common cold and nothing more. But how do you know these symptoms weren’t caused by allergies? It is never too late for you to start suffering from allergies.

Allergies

An allergy is a foreign protein substance that is commonly referred to as an allergen. When you inhale this foreign protein substance into your body, your immune system may overact if it does not recognize the substance. These substances can also get into your body by touching or eating them too.

The two most common allergens are dust and pollen. The immune system’s overreaction to these allergens will cause certain symptoms to occur, such as coughing, stuffy nose, wheezing, and itchy eyes. This is a result of histamine being released by the body in response to the overreaction in the immune system.

Common Cold

The cause of a common cold is not allergens, but rather a single virus strain. There are hundreds of virus strains on surfaces and floating in the air. If you become infected with a contagious virus, your immune system will respond by trying to attack it. During this attack, you will experience a number of side effects that come in the form of cold symptoms.

The most common symptoms include congestion, sore throat, coughing, and sneezing. It can take 1 to 2 weeks for the immune system to eliminate a virus. Once it does, those cold symptoms will go away. You will technically be immune to that particular virus strain, which means it can no longer make you sick. However, since there are hundreds of different strains in the air, any of them can make you sick again.

How to Tell the Difference

The symptoms are similar in each case. To tell whether you have a common cold or allergies, you must focus on how long you have the symptoms, and when you have the symptoms.

For instance, a common cold will last for no more than 2 weeks. You can get a cold at any time of the year. Allergies, on the other hand, usually infect people at a certain time of the year. This could be a time when pollen is in the air, and many people experience similar reactions. The duration of the symptoms will often be inconsistent too.

How to Survive Cold & Flu Season in San Diego

The cold and flu season is brutal to all of us. It is the season when the leaves fall from the trees and change colors. You’ll wake up one day and notice that you have a sore throat, nasty cough, runny nose, or a number of other symptoms. How can you prevent yourself from getting any worse? Could you have taken some preventive action to avoid these symptoms? Keep reading to learn more about how to survive cold and flu season in San Diego. If you need to see a doctor immediately, visit Urgent Care La Jolla ASAP.

Tips for Surviving Flu Season in San Diego

The trick to surviving the cold and flu season is avoiding as many people and things as possible. Since you’re breathing in a lot of cold air outside, you’re likely inhaling germs, dust, and a lot of other airborne particles that are going to make you sick. While you cannot avoid these elements of the air, you can certainly take better care of yourself by watching who and what you interact with.

First, stay away from anyone whom you know is sick. If you see someone coughing in your house or at work, keep your distance from them until their symptoms go away. But if this sick person is your spouse or someone you love, then wash your hands often and ask them to do the same. You could even dust, disinfect, and clean all the surfaces in your home.

Do not share your food or beverages with someone else. Only drink from a clean glass, and only eat from a clean plate. Otherwise, germs could very easily be spread around to various people like you. If you can, only drink from a purified water bottle. Do not trust any open beverage containers because they’re likely contaminated with someone else’s germs.

A completely balanced diet is always a good thing, but it is even more important during this season. Eat foods with a lot of zinc and vitamin D in them because they will strengthen your immune system. Take a multivitamin one time per day with a meal in order to pack in the nutrients even more. You’ll want to focus on immune health the most during this season. If you can succeed, then your cold and flu symptoms will go away a lot faster than normal.

If the cold and flu season in San Diego has gotten the best of you, schedule your appointment today to see one of our urgent care doctors. Or give us a call directly: (858) 255-8325

Urgent Care Clinic vs Emergency Room

When you get injured or come down with an illness, your first instinct might be to go to your primary care physician for treatment. Unfortunately, primary care physicians often require appointments that must be booked days or weeks in advance. What do you do when you need care right away? Well, if you need after-hours or immediate care, then your options are limited to an urgent care or emergency room. The facility that you should choose depends on the severity of the condition.

For instance, if you experience symptoms of a life or limb-threatening illness or injury, then you should call 911 or go to your nearest ER. Emergency rooms are equipped to treat the most serious illnesses and injuries, including major trauma, stroke, cardiac events, and other medical or psychiatric emergencies. Some conditions, such as acute appendicitis, may require surgical treatment that can only be done in an emergency or inpatient setting.

As for urgent care facilities, these are reserved for treating minor injuries and non-life threatening illnesses. People who have small cuts, sprained ankles, migraines, sore throats, upper respiratory symptoms, or other non-emergent illnesses can benefit from visiting an urgent care rather than an ER. Compared to your PCP’s office, many urgent care facilities offer expanded services and rapid access to doctors when you need it. Some urgent care facilities even offer on-site laboratory testing and diagnostic imaging.

Making the Choice

Sometimes people with non-life threatening illnesses or injuries choose to go to the emergency room rather than an urgent care. Although you should never hesitate to be seen at the emergency room if you feel like you need it, you will often wait longer and pay more than if you had presented to an urgent care for the same symptoms. Before making the choice of where to be seen, you should consider both the severity of your symptoms and your medical history to determine whether or not your condition warrants urgent or emergent care. Some insurance groups, health groups, and universities offer their members a phone-triage service where you can speak to a nurse to help you decide where to be seen.

The bottom line is that many conditions are appropriate for urgent care, while some require the resources of an emergency room. Knowing the difference can save you time, money, and offer the most effective healthcare for your specific condition.
